울산 석유화학공단의 LNG·휘발유·경유를 저장한 불탱크를 보면서 아파트를 떠올렸다. 불탱크를 아파트로 치환하는 일은 어렵지 않았다. 우리 삶 자체가 거대한 탄소 덩어리였다.
이미 인류에게 땅과 집은 우리가 뿌리를 내릴 수 있는 장소가 아니라 투자를 위한 대상으로 바뀌었다. 땅에 기록된 오염된 역사와 그것을 세탁하는 일은 자본논리에 의해 쉽게 행해진다. 대형 개발사들은 저가의 땅을 사들여 고가의 아파트를 건설하여 팔아넘긴다. 나는 대한민국의 유명 아파트 브랜드 라벨이 붙은 연료탱크를 분양하는 모델 하우스를 상상했다. 이 모델 하우스가 주는 기이한 느낌은 우리가 자연에 행한 것에 대한 성찰의 실마리가 될 것이다.
While looking at the LNG, gasoline, and diesel tanks at the Ulsan Petrochemical Complex, my thoughts turned to apartments for human habitation. It was not challenging to envision replacing the tanks with living spaces for people. Our lives themselves form a giant carbon mass, like fossil fuel itself.
For humans, land and homes have transformed into investments, no longer just places to lay our heads. The land’s history is tainted by capitalism. The ground itself is laundered as if it were cash. Major developers acquire inexpensive land, construct upscale apartments, and sell them. I envisioned model houses set amid fuel tanks. I decided they would be adorned with labels from well-known Korean apartment brands. The peculiar ambience of this model house neighbourhood serves as a cue for reflection on what we have done to nature.
